4.3.2 Statically loaded principal structural weldments shall he subject to the requirements of 5.10.
4.3.3 Cyclically loaded principal structural weidments shall be subject to the requirements of 5.11.
4.4 Combined Unit Stresses. In the case of axial stress combined with bending, the allowable unit stress of each kind shall be governed by the requirements of 5.10 and 5.11, and the maximum combined unit stresses calculated shall be limited in accordance with the requirements of the contract.
4.5 Fracture Toughness Requirements. Design criteria of welded joints in machinery and equipment could specify a minimum level of fracture toughness. Design criteria requiring fracture toughness may be specified by, but not limited to, the following:
(1) The Owner specifies requirements for fracture toughness in the contract documents.
(2) Required by the Engineer.
(3) Low temperature service conditions are stated in the design specification.
(4) Regulatory requirements such as Roll-Over Protective Structure/Falling-Object Protective Structure (ROPS! FOPS) specifications require fracture toughness.
When fracture toughness is required, the Engineer shall specify the materials and portions of the structure requiring testing, the method of fracture toughness testing, testing temperatures, frequency of testing, acceptance criteria, when heat- affected zone testing is required, and other circumstances associated with the required testing. When minimum fracture toughness for welded joints is required, the welding procedure specification(s) for the applicable joints shall be qualified by test; qualification by prototype testing or prequalitied welding procedures is not permitted. Welding procedure qualification testing shall include fracture toughness testing of the weld metal and, if required, the heat-affected zone.
4.6 Filler Metals. All primary welds on principal structural weldments shall be made with filler metals meeting the requirements of Table 5.7.
4.7 Nondestructive Testing.
4.7.1 Standard Inspection. All welds shall be subject to the inspection requirements of 8.1.3.1. Additionally, all primary welds on the principal structural weldment shall be subject to the inspection requirements of Table , as applicable.
4.7.2 Additional NDT. When nondestructive testing beyond the requirements of Table 2 is to be performed, the extent of testing shall be specified in contract documents.
4.7.3 NDT requirements in Table 8.2 may be modified as determined by the Owner.
4.7.4 The Engineer may deviate from the requirements of Table 8.2. Deviations from NDT requirements should be validated by the use of any combination of finite clement analysis, representative sample testing. or prototc testing determined appropriate for the product by the Engineer.
4.8 Requirements for Secondary Welds. Secondary welds are not required to conform to Clause 5, Welded Connection Design. All other clauses are required for secondary welds, as applicable.
5. Welded Connection Design
5.1 Joint Details.
5.1.1 Typicaljoint details can be found in Annex B. The standard welding symbols used to describe joint details shall comply with either AWS A2.4. Standard Symbols for Welding Brazing, and Nondestructive Examination or iso 2553. Welded, Brazed and Soldered Joints — Symbolic Representations on Drawings. The Manufacturer shall specify which standard shall be used on the drawings or in the contract documents.
5.2 Transition of Thicknesses or Widths at Butt Joints.
5.2.1 Butt joints in principal structural weldments between parts having unequal thicknesses and subject to tensile stress shall have a smooth transition between the offset surfaces at a slope of no more than I in 2—1/2 with the surface of either part. The transition may be accomplished by sloping weld surfaces, by chamfering the thicker part, or by a combination of the two methods (see Figure 5.1).AWS D14.4  pdf download.
