3. Definitions
The welding terms used in this standard are defined in
AWS A3.O, Standard Welding Terms and Definitions.
Other terms used in this standard arc defined as follows:
approved. Approved is to accept as satisfactory.
acceptance criteria. Acceptance criteria are specified limits placed on characteristics of an item or process defined in standards, codes, specifications, or other documents.
candidate. A candidate is an individual applying for qualification.
code. A code is a standard consisting of a set of condiLions and requirements relating to a particular subject, and indicating appropriate procedures by which it can be determined that the requirements have been met. It is a standard suitable for adoption by a governmental authority as a part of a law or regulation, or as specified by other mandatory documents.
nondestructive examination (NDE). Nondestructive examination is the act of determining the suitability of some material or component for its intended purpose using techniques that do not affect its serviceability.
Procedure Qualification Record (PQR). A record of welding variables used to produce an acceptable test weldment and the results of tests conducted on the weidment to qualify a welding procedure specification.
qualification. Qualification is demonstrated training, skill, knowledge and experience required for personnel to perform the duties of a specific job or function.
qualified. Qualified is having complied with specific requirements.
Quality assurance (QA). Quality assurance is all planned and systematic activities, implemented within the quality system, and demonstrated as needed, to provide adequate confidence that the entity will fulfill requirements for quality.
Quality control (QC). Operational techniques and activities that are used to fulfill requirements for quality.
Sign off. Sign off is to acknowledge in writing.
Specification. A specification is a standard that clearly and accurately describes the essential technical requirements for a material, product, system, or service. It indicates the procedures, methods, qualifications, or equipment by which it can be determined that requirements have been met. A standard suitable for adoption in procurement documents.
Standard. Standard is a generic term incorporating codes, specifications, recommended practices, classifications, methods, and guides that have been prepared by a sponsoring committee, and approved and adopted in accordance with established procedures.
Welding Procedure Specification (WPS). A document providing the required welding variables for a specific application to assure repeatability by properly trained welders and welding operators.
Witness. Witness is the observing of something.
4. Levels for Qualification
There are three levels of qualifications for plastics welding inspection personnel. These levels are:
4.1 Associate Plastics Welding Inspector (APWI). A
person meeting the qualification requirements of 6.1 and
Clause 7.
4.2 Plastics Welding Inspector (PW1). A person meeting the qualification requirements of 6.2 and 7.
4.3 Senior Plastics Welding Inspector (SPWI). A person meeting the qualification requirements of 6.3 and Clause 7.
5. Functions
5.1 Duties. The welding inspector’s specific duties shall be defined by the employer.
5.1.1 APWL. The APWI shall be able to perform inspections and prepare reports under the direct supervision of an SPWI or PWI, within visible and audible range, and as defined in 5.2. It is the SPWI or PWI, however, who has ultimate responsibility for determin- ing if welded assemblies conform to workmanship and acceptance criteria.AWS G1.6  pdf download.
